Rising 200 meters above the central plains of Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Rock Fortress also known as Lion Rock is one of the country’s most breathtaking landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, this ancient royal citadel combines history, architecture, and nature in one unforgettable experience. With panoramic views, world-famous frescoes, and beautifully landscaped gardens, Sigiriya is a must-visit destination for any traveler exploring Sri Lanka.
In 477 AD, King Kashyapa chose Sigiriya as his royal residence, transforming the massive rock into a fortified palace complex. Ingenious engineering feats such as moats, water gardens, and underground tunnels made it both beautiful and secure. After the king’s fall, the site became a Buddhist monastery for over 1,000 years. Today, Sigiriya is recognized as one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning in the world.
