One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Anuradhapura Sacred City is home to towering stupas, ancient monasteries, and the revered Sri Maha Bodhi tree — a sapling from the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
Founded in the 4th century BC, Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka and a major center for Theravāda Buddhism. Many of its religious monuments are still active pilgrimage sites today.
Light, modest clothing is recommended, along with comfortable footwear for walking between sites. Many areas require shoes to be removed, so carry socks if needed. Sun protection such as hats and sunscreen is essential. Photography is generally permitted, but avoid intrusive behaviour during religious rituals.
Early morning or late afternoon.
Tuk-tuk or bicycle recommended for large distances.
With our Anuradhapura tour, you’ll see not just the ancient ruins but also the living traditions of Buddhism. We connect the past with the present, giving you a truly immersive cultural experience.
