Once the capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th–13th centuries, Polonnaruwa Ancient City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing the grandeur of medieval Sinhalese civilization. The ruins include palaces, temples, monasteries, and massive stone statues, all surrounded by lush greenery.
After the decline of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa became the kingdom’s capital under King Vijayabahu I. It thrived as a center of governance, religion, and trade until the 13th century when it was abandoned after repeated invasions.
